Headaches Due to Sinuses

Many headaches are caused by chronic sinusitis, an ongoing inflammation or infection of the sinuses. This may be the case if your headaches are accompanied by increased nasal mucus, post-nasal drip, and sinus fullness or pressure. Sinus pain can occur in the forehead, cheeks, above or around the eyes.  Sinus pain can also spread to the head or neck, further aggravating tension and whiplash headaches.

Treatment

Manual therapy, especially Cranialsacral Therapy, can be very helpful in increasing the natural emptying of filled sinuses.

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block (SPGB) Therapy also may provide relief from chronic sinus headaches, as well as cluster headaches. Specifically, SPGB Therapy is the temporary anesthetizing (numbing) of the sphenopalatine ganglia (SPG).

The SPG are collections of specialized nerve cells that are located at the back of the nasal passage. The treatment consists of gently introducing Procaine™ into the posterior nasopharynx, numbing the SPG for about 30-45 minutes. In many cases, one treatment will resolve the headaches. For others, additional visits may be required to maximize pain relief.

Persistent sinusitis calls for the attention of a competent ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. An appropriate CAT scan (not an MRI) may also be required.
